Fedora “Fay” Hvizdak was a national figure skating champion of Czechoslovakia who went on to coach women skaters on the U.S. Olympic skating and hockey teams as well as special needs athletes for the Special Olympics. Before retiring at age 77, Fay was a beloved instructor at Greenwich Skating Club as well as other figure skating clubs in Connecticut and New York. A perpetual award at GSC is named in her honor. While she coached some female Olympic figure and hockey skaters, she said that her greatest accomplishment was coaching children with special needs. In 2016, a competition skating rink in Slovakia was named in her honor. She lived to be 97, leaving behind two sons, a stepdaughter, two daughters-in-law, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Her legacy of accomplishments and mentoring in the figure skating world will continue to inspire generations of skaters to come.
